Gateway Upgrade Project, Brisbane, Australia

The project is the largest construction development ever undertaken in Queensland, and will add a second six lane road bridge over the River Brisbane by 2010. The height of the one mile long bridge is limited to 80m due to air traffic restrictions, which has required the use of innovative designs and construction methods. Completed in 1986, the original bridge held the world record for a prestressed concrete free cantilever bridge, and the box girder is still the largest prestressed concrete, single box in the world.

Soil Dynamics (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. completed Bi-Directional Static Load Tests to check the design of the piles supporting the pylons in the riverbed. Two of the piles tested had a diameter of 1,800mm and a test load up to 4,240 tonnes. The work was given such significance that the Minister for Trade, Peter Beattie, started a pile driving machine to mark the opening of the project, and made reference to the information that Soil Dynamics provided in his opening ceremony speech. In addition to being a prestigious project in its own right, this also represents the first contract completed in Australia for Soil Dynamics (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.
