Coal Fired Power Plant at Tanjung Bin, Johor Bahru, Malaysia


The project, a 3 x 700 MW Coal Fired Power Plant at Tanjung Bin, is a conventionally designed pulverised coal fired power station consisting of three sub-critical boilers and tandem compound type turbine generators. The units will burn bituminous coal as the primary fuel. Each of the three coal-fired generating plant has a Flue Gas Desulphurization system (FGD) and is supported by common facilities including an ash handling system.

Balanced Engineering & Construction  (BEC) were awarded the contract to design and construct the 200m tall chimney and two 42m tall fly ash silos for the power plant. The chimney has three 7.5m internal diameter top hung flues and is supported on sixty 1.2m diameter piles, each 50m long. The silos have a storage capacity of 6000m³ and are supported on a combined raft of precast spun piles.

The flues are supported within a concrete windshield of 21.8m internal diameter, varying in thickness from 600mm at the base to 350mm at the top. The structure is supported on a 2.5m deep reinforced concrete circular foundation, with sixty 1.2m diameter piles, arranged in concentric rings. The silos have a 350mm thick wall construction for the storage tank, with 600mm thick supporting walls below. A 1.2m thick reinforced concrete slab is provided at the base of the tank, which is supported by the windshield wall around its perimeter, and additional internal columns. The silos are founded on a single raft with one hundred and eighty-seven 800mm diameter precast spun piles, each 35m long.

Soil Dynamics (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. has carried out High Strain Dynamic Pile Testing, Cross Hole Sonic Logging Tests and Pile Integrity Tests on a total of 129 bored piles and 172 pre-stressed spun concrete piles.  The pile sizes for the bored piles were 1050mm and 1200mm in diameters, with test loads of up to 1927 tonnes, while the pre-stressed spun concrete piles ranged from 250mm to 1000mm in diameter, with test loads up to 1040 tonnes.
